Preparations for layout changes on the Lunar Documentation Wiki are moving along and I’ve updated MediaWiki to the latest and greatest version.

The theme system in MediaWiki isn’t the greatest, so it will take some time and hammering to get things in and formatted properly. Since previous changes were also done directly to the default theme, the update has reverted the customizations. Plans are [tentatively] to make a new theme instead so that changes wont be reverted in the future.

Again, if anyone has suggestions, complaints, etc., please pass them along.

Lunar-Linux module site facelift

Just in case nobody noticed, the Module Site has received a much-needed face-lift, which uses the base template for the main Lunar-Linux website. Some minor changes were also made to improve the overall speed and HTML-correctness since some areas actually had broken markup. The site’s URL scheme was also updated to be more search-engine friendly and proper 404 pages/headers were added where needed. The color scheme and table layout remains, but this may change in the near future as I decide where I would like to go with things. Caching and compression is the next priority, as some dependency pages can take longer than wanted to generate and render.

Beyond that, the wiki and other sites may also receive the same treatment. The screenshots site also leaves a lot to be desired since no work went into the template after the Gallery update, but I am considering migrating it into the main website as a sub-blog. There are various good and bad things about that idea, though. If anyone has ideas, suggestions, grievances, etc. please feel free to share them.

New Look!

Hopefully it’s quite obvious that the website has changed just a bit. This is because of our migration over to WordPress from Joomla, which was brought about due to a number of factors:

Easier to maintain once set up
Easier to keep updated & migrate to new versions
Better selection of ready-made themes and plugins

Our site has been rather stale for a time, as we had not seen a fresh post since August, 2010 for the release of 1.6.5 however this was largely due to the main site only being used for news announcements and releases. Since our development team is rather small and the nature of Lunar-Linux’s moonbase of rolling updates without the need of a full release, new articles on the site had been few and far between. To liven things up, we decided it would be nice to have developers or users contribute articles by turning our main site into a “planet” of sorts.

As you will see (or already have), posts will be aggregated from other blogs belonging to our developers and perhaps a few users. The first of which is Jean Bruenn, also known as “wdp” in our IRC channel who is a long-time contributor, mirror provider, and now one of our developers. Jean’s personal blog is where most of his posts originate, along side his own musings.

We are aware of some known issues about the migration. We weren’t able to bring over comments, but there were not many to begin with, so this should not be too much of a concern. Some articles or pages may have formatting issues, but we should be cleaning those up soon. Also of note, some new redirects have been made, some removed, others changed. Should you spot any issues that need our attention, please submit a bug report (yes, the website is on there) and let us know.

Website Translations

As some may have noticed, we’ve added some translation icons to the website. Right now, they don’t do a lot since not much of the website is actually translated, but we will get to them as we can.

If you are able to do translations and you would like to contribute an article translation (or even menu items), we will certainly be interested in them. You can either send them via email directly to me at striker@lunar-linux.org, send them to our mailing lists, or stop by IRC and give us a link.

Joomla! 1.5.x Migration

We have just migrated our website to Joomla! 1.5.x as some people may have already noticed.The update went fairly smoothly, but we have lost some functionality that was provided by 3rd party modules; namely Polls and Comments.

Polls do exist in some rudimentary form in Joomla!, however we replaced them before because they were not nearly as flexible as the addon we found. As for comments, I’m not sure if they exist in 1.5.x or not. I will look for a suitable replacement if they do not exist.

If any hiccups are noticed on the site, please let us know via the mailing lists or via IRC. Thanks!

Edit: Apparently there still are no article comments (seriously, how can that not be useful?)…Also, I do plan on migrating our old theme over, however it will need to be rewritten for 1.5.x compatibility.

Edit²: I’ve installed a comment addon which seems to work. Please contact us if you’re unable to post comments (keep in mind they ARE moderated first, so they probably wont appear right away).

Edit^III: We decided to keep the theme and just tweak it instead.

Ready to go Live

Alright, the new site has been long in the works and is finally ready to be put to its full potential. While the site still lacks some of the old site’s content, most of it has been or will be moved to the new Wiki.

The website now sports mantis as the bug tracker, MediaWiki for our brand spanking new wiki, and phpBB2 for our new forums. The main website is running on Mambo OS. While before all logins were pretty much tied into one another, the new setup cannot benefit from that, but it is in our opinion that many of the various sections of the website were not fully utilised by everyone, so anyone that does not wish to use the forums does not need to sign into them. Also, the main website has no login for non-developers since it will be merely a news portal.

First Real News Item?

Seeing that the main page has no real content on it, I hereby designate this post as the first real news item!

However, seeing that it contains no real news, can it honestly be called news? I don’t know, so I give up.
