Lunar Linux’s new daily releases.

One of the great things about Lunar Linux is that it’s a rolling-release distro. Which is to say, once you’ve installed it, bringing it all up to date is a simple matter of using the lunar update facility, which updates the moonbase–the software metadata repository–and then updates all of the software on your system to the current latest version. However, the latest official ISO release was a while ago. Which means that if you download Lunar Linux from the download page, you will have quite a long adventure ahead of you as everything needs to be updated.

That’s why I’ve started making daily ISO releases. They started out as a way for me to incorporate new software into the Lunar Linux installer, then they turned into a way to test pull requests in the core moonbase, and now they’re a reliable, safe, Lunar Linux installer. They work as USB media or if you burn them to a DVD–unfortunately they’ve grown too big for CD media over the years. If you want to install headless, they have serial-port installation support (think virsh console if you’re wondering why anyone needs serial ports in 2023).

So if you want to try Lunar Linux, please try the daily ISO.

Hello!

We have received many questions as of late if the Lunar Linux project is still alive; the short answer to that is YES! Of course we can’t deny the fact that we are a little short on manpower right now, but packages are getting updated pretty much every day. If you want to track the package updates, head over to our GitHUB page.

Work is also ongoing to release a new official ISO, but we don’t have a firm release date set. While waiting for the official release we have been producing daily ISO’s that can be used until then, after all it’s only used to bootstrap your installation; Lunar Linux is as you know a rolling release distribution. The daily ISO’s can be found here.

Don’t hesitate to join our IRC channel #lunar on freenode if you have any questions, or if you just want to hang out with some nice people!

- The Lunar Team

Dear all,

You better believe it, the day you all have been waiting for has finally arrived. The Lunar team proudly announce the final release of Lunar Linux 1.7.0 codename ‘Sinus Successus’.

Like the phoenix rising from the ashes Lunar Linux is back with a vengeance; a lot of overhauling have been done all over the core tools, packages, installer and the ISO-builder. Even though our journey to reach this milestone have been a long one we hope that the changes and quality improvements we’ve made was worth the wait. So what are you waiting for? Go grab a copy of Lunar Linux while it is hot!

- The Lunar team

Dear all,

Some might have believed we were down for the count, but on the contrary we have actually been quite busy working on the core of Lunar (and with our lives). Four very long years has passed by since our last release. Yet there have been a few adventurous souls still brave enough to try the old 1.6.5 release and get it up to date; it wasn’t an easy journey but some eventually made it through and learned a lot in the process.

With that said the Lunar team is extremely proud to announce the release of Lunar Linux 1.7.0 Release Candidate 2 codename ‘Sinus Successus’!

I just commited a huge update to the way Lunar Linux handles its
most vital init scripts. From now on, a module named ‘lunar-init‘ is going to hold some of the more system-bound init scripts like ‘mount‘ (which has been with e2fsprogs before) and ‘network‘ (which has been a part of net-tools). This update is by no means automatic and requires your attention:

Run lunar update as usual. lunar-init is a dependency of
lunar/theedge and thus will get installed before anything else.

However, it is meant to fail on the first run since the old init scripts are still installed in /etc/init.d. DO NOT PANIC. This is the intended behaviour and saves us from dozens of lines of migration code.

Let your update continue as planned. e2fsprogs and net-tools have
both been “updated” (their UPDATED field has been set to today) in
order for them to complete a compilation without installing any init
scripts. This step has to be taken to asure that none of the init
scripts are tracked via any other installation logs than that of
‘lunar-init‘.

Check whether one of the following files is still present
in /etc/init.d/:

hostname

network

netmount

mount

If that is the case (and you do not employ your own version of these scripts) remove them on your own. If you don’t remove them on your own ‘lunar-init‘ is NOT going to install or overwrite any files present and will throw an error again.

Reinstall ‘lunar-init‘. It should now go smooth and without an error. If that is not the case DO NOT REBOOT your machine but report the problem to our bugtracker.

Check whether you now have existing copies in /etc/init.d of the files mentioned earlier.

And we’re done. Congratulations! Its now safe to reboot your box (not
mandatory).

FAQ

Q Any updates on the init scripts?

A Absolutely. The network script has been refactored to support WEP/WPA/ifplugd out of box. Now you will be able to configure your wpa_supplicant and just let it run at boottime. Combined with ifplugd it lets you run dhcp clients on requests or network connectivity. Roaming and network priorities etc .. you name it.

The other scripts have been tweaked to work with chkconfig.

Q Are there any other init scripts going to be intregrated with this module?

A Most likely.

Q Why go through all this trouble?

A It makes the init scripts maintainable. Before that we always had to bump individual versions of modules that weren’t related to any of the actions these scripts invoked.

Q No seriously, why?

A Because sofar said so.

Any further questions or bugs can be directed either to this list, the IRC channel or our beloved bugtracker.

Enjoy!

The 1.6.0 ISO has a minor flaw in the installation procedure that doesn’t correctly configure the kernel sources in /usr/src/linux.

People who wish to compile XOrg or any other module that requires kernel sources will be unable to with out doing the following:

$ make -C /usr/src/linux prepare

this correctly creates /usr/src/linux/include/version.h, and should fix this problem.

Hi,

With great pleasure we release “Indium Antimonide”, also known as
the Lunar-Linux 1.6.0-i686 Installer ISO in to the public. After
over half a year of work on our first 2.6.x kernel based ISO series,
it is finally ready, and ready it is!

This is a major step forward from the 1.5.x series releases, adding a
lot of features to Lunar-Linux installs, such as SELINUX, NPTL threads,
udev, and more 2.6-kernel related improvements to the Linux OS.

This release also adds the user-friendly installer and refines it
greatly. It adds better hardware recognition and module loading
options, an easier way to setup compiles against kernel sources and
headers, and easier compile optimization management with a completely
pluggable package management tool. The installer is now also capable
of installing and initializing software RAID.

This ISO comes with gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.6, linux-2.6.16, perl-5.8.8,
and other rock solid base components. New packages on this ISO are wipe
(secure data deletion), foremost (arbitrary data recovery tool), lftp
(popular request), a full vim, ethtool and dmidecode (for network
and hardware diagnostics).

The installer allows you to install pre-compiled kernels suitable
for most systems, and offers a wide choice, such as server-optimized
kernels, minimal, and desktop-lowlatency ones. Alternatively the user
can compile a kernel himself as with older releases. The installer
now also provides a fully configured kernel source tree.

changelog:
ChangeLog

Future work now concentrates on bringing an updated 2.4-based ISO
installer, and a x86_64 enabled one. Stay tuned for news on progress
with that.

Special thanks to the Lunar Team for making rock solid packages.
Kudos to my former employer for letting me go that easy, my wife for
bringing me to this new exciting place in the world and paying the
bills for the first three months while I worked on the foundation
of this ISO, and my new employer for paying me to work on Linux.
This last half year has been crazy, and it has been the best, thanks
to all of you!

Enjoy,
